what i collect, and what i do with it.

This site and the services on it are run by Jay Campbell, a sole proprietor based in Knoxville, Tennessee. There is no company behind me, no data team, and no third party i hand your details to for money. When this page says "i", it means one person.

Reach me at jay@thejaycampbell.com. That address is where privacy requests go, and i answer them myself.

• Browsing this site logs your visit, including your IP address and the rough city it maps to. It goes to a private database only i can read.
• The contact form sends me your name, email and message. Nothing else happens to it.
• Calls to the AI answering line are recorded and transcribed. Every call, not a sample.
• I do not sell any of it, i do not share it for anyone else's marketing, and there are no ad or retargeting pixels on this site.
• Ask me to delete something and i delete it. You do not need a legal reason and you do not need to live in a state that has a privacy law.

Every page view sends a record to my own server, which stores it in a private database and pushes a notification to my phone. That record contains:

• the page you landed on, including any campaign tags in the link (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content)
• the site or search engine you came from, if your browser reports one
• your IP address, and the approximate city, region, country, and internet provider it maps to
• your browser, operating system, and full browser user-agent string
• your browser's language, time zone, screen size, and connection type
• a random ID stored in your browser so repeat visits from the same browser line up

I also record when you click a link that leaves this site, and when you click through to the contact page. Known crawlers and bots are skipped entirely.

The random ID lives in your browser's local storage under the key tjc_vid, not in a cookie. It is a random string with no name attached to it. Clearing site data for thejaycampbell.com deletes it, and the next visit generates a new one.

Two other things happen in your browser that are worth naming. The IP-to-location lookup is done by a third-party service (ipwho.is), so your IP address is sent to them over an encrypted connection to answer it. And the fonts load from Google Fonts, which means Google's servers see the request your browser makes for them.

straight up: this is more than most small business sites log, and i would rather say so than bury it. i use it to see which pages actually make a phone ring. it is not sold, not shared, and not plugged into an ad network.

When you send the form on the contact page, i receive your name, your email address, your message, and the IP address and browser the message was sent from. It reaches me three ways at once: an email, a notification on my phone, and a row in a private database so i do not lose it.

The form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which runs a background check that you are a person rather than a script. Cloudflare sees that request.

I use what you send me to reply to you and, if we end up working together, to run the work. I do not add you to a mailing list from the contact form. My newsletter is a separate thing you sign up for on purpose.

• I do not sell personal information, and i never have.
• I do not share it with anyone for their own advertising or marketing.
• There are no advertising pixels, no retargeting tags, and no third-party analytics scripts on this site.
• No mobile phone number or text-message consent is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes, ever.
• I do not use what a caller tells the answering line to sell them anything else.

Some businesses use my AI answering service to pick up the calls they miss. If you call one of them and the AI answers, here is what happens to what you say.

straight up: the call is recorded and transcribed. every call, not a sample. the greeting says so out loud before you have said anything, on every line, and no shop can switch that off. it is recorded so the owner can hear what you actually said instead of working off a garbled note, and so a wrong address can be corrected from the recording rather than guessed at.

What gets captured on a normal call:

• the number you called from
• your name and a callback number, if you give them
• the service address, if you give one
• what you said was wrong, and anything else you said during the call
• an audio recording and a written transcript of the whole call
• the appointment window, if one was booked

That goes to the shop as a text message, to the shop's booking calendar if an appointment was made, and into the shop's account with the telephone provider that carries the call. The shop owns it. I run the system for them, and i can see it in order to keep the system working.

Ask it straight out whether it is a person and it will tell you it is not, in the first sentence, every time. It will never claim to be one. What it cannot do is put you through to somebody: there is no human sitting behind it waiting to take over, so if you would rather deal with a person, hang up and text the shop, and the owner gets a note either way. If you want your recording deleted, email me and tell me the number you called from and roughly when, and i will delete it and tell the shop i did.

The demo number published on this site is a sales demo, not a real business line. It plays the part of a Knoxville HVAC shop so a contractor can hear what answering sounds like.

Calls to it are recorded and transcribed like any other call, and a summary of the call, including the number you called from, is texted to me. Nothing you say to the demo reaches a real dispatcher, and no real technician gets sent anywhere. Do not give it anything you would not put in an email to a stranger.

The service sends text messages, and this is exactly what they are.

• Business owners who use the answering service get a dispatch text after a call comes in, plus occasional service messages about their line. That is the product working, and it is the only text traffic the system sends on its own.
• Texts come from a number that belongs to the service, not from your own shop number.
• Message frequency depends on how many calls you get. Message and data rates may apply.
• Reply STOP to any message to stop receiving them. Reply HELP for help, or just email me.

straight up: no mobile information, phone number, or text-messaging opt-in is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. consent to receive these messages is never sold, rented, or passed on.

Stopping the texts does not cancel the service, and cancelling the service stops the texts. If you want both, say both.

When i run the answering line for your business, the calls, the recordings, the transcripts and the customer details that come out of them are your business records. I hold them so the system can work. I do not treat them as mine.

• I do not use your customer list to contact your customers about anything except the job they called you about.
• I do not sell it, share it, or use it to market to your customers on anyone's behalf.
• If you buy the tier where i keep your customer and job records, that data lives on managed hosting that gets backed up, not on a laptop and not on a machine at my house.
• You can ask for a full export at any time and i will send it, in a format you can open, without a retention conversation first.
• When you stop working with me, you get the export and then i delete my copies.

The exact commitments around cancelling, exporting and deletion are in the terms.

Running any of this means using other companies' services. These are the ones that can see some part of it, and what they see:

• Vercel: hosts this website, so it handles every request to it and keeps its own server logs.
• Telnyx: carries the phone calls and text messages, and stores the call recordings and transcripts.
• Cal.com and Google Calendar: hold the bookings the assistant makes on a shop's calendar.
• Notion: the private database where site visits and contact messages are stored.
• Resend: delivers the email that tells me a contact form came in.
• ntfy: delivers the push notification to my phone.
• Cloudflare: runs the Turnstile bot check on the contact form.
• ipwho.is: turns an IP address into an approximate city.
• Google Fonts: serves the two typefaces this site uses.
• beehiiv: runs my newsletter, if you subscribe to it.

Each of them has its own privacy policy and i am not going to pretend i control what they do internally. What i control is what i send them, which is only what the job needs.

Honest answer: there is no automatic deletion job running today. Site visit records, contact messages, call recordings and transcripts stay until i clear them out or until somebody asks me to.

For a business i work with, the working rule is that your records stay live for as long as i am running your line, and get exported and deleted when we stop. For everything else, the fastest route to deletion is asking.

Email jay@thejaycampbell.com and tell me what you want: a copy of what i hold about you, a correction, or deletion. I will do it and confirm when it is done.

You do not need to cite a law and you do not need to live somewhere that has one. If you are covered by a state privacy law that gives you these rights formally, you have them here too, including the right not to be treated differently for using them. I may need to check you are who you say you are before handing over a copy of somebody's data, which is protection for you rather than an obstacle.

One limit worth stating: if you were a caller to a business i answer for, the record of your call is that business's record too. I will delete my copy and tell them you asked, but i cannot delete their copy of their own customer note for them.

None of this is aimed at children, and i do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If a child's details ended up in here somehow, email me and it is gone.

If what i collect changes, this page changes with it, and the date at the top moves. I am not going to quietly widen this and rely on you re-reading it. If a change is material for somebody i already work with, they get told directly.
